One of a Kind Show & Sale
December 2009

What a fun show! Very long days, but fun. One of the most exciting parts was meeting folks in the neighborhood who'd seen our studio in passing by. Additionally, it was great to meet so many people who were enthusiastic about the idea of learning chainmaille.

We also were able to educate lots of folks about the process of anodizing niobium. Though our favorite quote of the show came from a guy who looked at one of our signs and said, "Iodized neo-bomb?!? Never heard of it." *grin* At least now, several hundred more folks know about little ol' element 41 on the Periodic Table. Yay for science!

Please check out our One of a Kind Show 2009 album on Facebook for more photos.

Bead&Button Show
June 2009

What a fun show! Rebeca taught a class, won third place in Bead Dreams Finished Jewelry (the first chainmaille finalist and ribbon winner ever—yay!) and Rebeca, Kat, Vanessa and Jen all worked our booth on the show floor.

Please check out our Bead&Button 2009 album on Facebook for photos of our booth set up and tear down as well as the Meet the Teachers reception, some of Rebeca's favorite Bead Dreams entries and some of the jewelry Rebeca bought from just a few of the many cool artists at the show. She wishes she could have bought a lot more!

When we did our in-house survey of "how did the show go, and what can we improve for next year" our unanimous answer about our favorite part of the show was: " Getting to meet excited customers, and being able to put faces to names." Yeah, what can we say, our customers are the best. :-)

Columbia College Special Event
DIY: Concept, Create, Capitol

April 22, 2009

This event at Columbia College in Chicago focused on DIY Culture in Consumer Marketing. Several local crafters had booths, and some did brief demos. At our table, we showed folks that, yes, we do make these one ring at a time. A couple of students stepped up to try their hand at closing the rings. Most, however, seemed to be in awe of Vanessa's jacket and the chainmaille Sears Tower, and too intimitaded to actually try chainmaille. *grin* Rebeca was one of the panelists who discussed what goes into running a successful DIY business.

Congratulations to Anthony S, winner of the "Guess how many rings" contest. He won a $25 gift certificate for his guess, which was 819 rings from the actual number. See the chart below for full details on the guessing contest. Note the crazy span of guesses, from the low 350 to the ridiculously high 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.

Blue Buddha Boutique Holiday Show
December 11, 2008

Thank you—our first official holiday show was a great success! We loved meeting all the new folks who were just finding out about us, and of course, we warmly welcomed back the customers and students who'd been with us for years.

Favorite overheard quote:
Woman #1 (in a hushed voice): "Wow, there's a LOT of chainmaille in here..."
Woman #2 (nodding in agreement): "Yeah, I kinda think they might specialize in that...did you see her scarf?"

Congratulations to W. Yousef, the winner of our drawing for a $75 gift certificate. And, finally, a big thank you to Semiramis and Blue Sky Bakery & Cafe for their delicious food. If you're in the neighborhood, check them out and tell 'em Blue Buddha sent you!

Blue Buddha Boutique Holiday Show
December 14, 2007

Our first show in our new space! Thanks to all the students, customers and friends who came out on this chilly night. We even piqued the interest of a few local folks who saw the open house sign and wandered in. "Oh, this is great!" they exclaimed. "We thought for sure someone boring was going to rent this space, like a real estate company or something, but this is exciting!" Yay!

Since we hadn't yet moved in, the space was mostly empty, except for the table of jewelry I'd set up. So, we decided to put up signs indicating the purpose of each room. I wrote up a paragraph or two, and Artie made nifty visuals, some of which you can see below.

And now, we're off to count inventory, pack and move. We can't wait to get settled in the new space, and we look forward to serving you from our new location!

As usual, one of my favorite shows of the year! I enjoyed meeting so many new chainmaille fans, as well as catching up with former students and customers. And this year, I actually had the chance to do a little shopping before the show started. I am quite proud to be among such talented craftspeople.

Ayla's Wonderful World of Beads
November 11, 2007

Our first show selling supplies! Artie & I had a blast, and were excited that so many of you knew about the Boutique from the recent article in Step by Step Wire Jewelry magazine.

Welcome, new chainmaille addicts. Er, um, I mean hobbyists. This craft isn't addictive at all. *whistles innocently*

Bead&Button Show
June 2007

This was my first year teaching at Bead&Button, and I had a blast. A somewhat exhausting blast, but a blast nonetheless! I met some incredible people—vendors, fellow instructors, and of course students—that I will not soon forget. Students, I hope you enjoyed the classes as much as I enjoyed teaching! Things were so busy that I didn't get a chance to take many photographs, but I did manage to capture some hands making maille for the first time. (Thank you to the women in the Chainmaille Earring class, for allowing me to photograph you.) Also, you can see my chainmaille scarf and Vanessa's shrug, which we wore to the Meet the Teachers reception. See you all next year!

Chicago Winter Delights - Stitching Salon
January 20, 2007

As part of the City Of Chicago's Winter Delights Festival, a Stitching Salon was set up in downtown Chicago. On January 20th, I did several artist demos at the Salon. Over the course of the day, more than two dozen people crafted a pair or two of earrings, and about 10 people learned European 4-in-1 (Mesh). In addition, several fellow maillers and students stopped by to work on projects and check out what other maillers were up to. All in all, it was a really exciting day! So exciting, in fact, that I completely forgot to take photographs until the last 5 minutes of the event. Oops! I did, however, manage to run around before everyone left and snap a few pictures.

Congratulations to Krista S, winner of the "Guess how many rings" contest. Because her guess was so close (only 9 away from the actual number), I increased her gift certificate amount from $20 to $25. Actually, I was quite impressed by the guessing this time around...you guys are getting good!
