You say “Goodbye”, I say “Hello”

We all had great fun “ring”-ing in the new year and are busy settling back into the swing of things around here.  2011 is a year slated to bring big changes and continued growth here at B3 and the effects of this stretch are already starting to become apparent on our about page.  If you have visited our about page recently, you may have noticed some new faces. Over the past few months, the B3 team has experienced some changes and while it means that we miss seeing some folks everyday, they are all positive signs of growth for everyone involved!

First our B3 goodbyes (and best of lucks!)….

Several months ago the incredibly talented Vanessa Walilko made the decision to take the leap to become a full-time, self-employed jewelry artist starting Kali Butterfly. While we miss her terribly at the studio, we could not be happier for her. In the short amount of time that she has been focusing all her energy on her own work, Vanessa has received tons of well-deserved praise, won awards, and found herself swamped with orders – a great problem to have. Not many people may know that Vanessa was actually the first employee Rebeca ever hired. She was hired to help Rebeca keep up with jewelry orders and while she had been mailling for only a short time, she proved to be technically proficient and talented beyond many others considered for the position. Her vision and talent have only grown over the past several years and we are thrilled to think that Rebeca and Blue Buddha Boutique had a part in helping her get where she is today.

Vanessa is not the only artist leaving the B3 nest – Kat Wisniewski has also been working incredibly hard over the past several months to start her own jewelry business, Elemental Art Jewelry. Many of you have probably experienced Kat’s impeccable customer service skills and chainmaille expertise over the past few years as she was the friendly voice on the other end of the phone at Blue Buddha for quite some time. Behind the scenes, Kat worked tirelessly to help B3 grow, training new folks and managing employees with the same patience and enthusiasm she gave to our customers. Kat has transitioned out of her full-time customer service position and is now doing order fulfillment while she works to get her business off the ground.  She will also continue to design kits and instructions for B3 (like her incredibly popular Glass Caterpillar) and like Vanessa, will remain a close comrade in the chainmaille community.

While the energy that Kat and Vanessa brought to the studio can never be replaced, we are happy to announce that we have added two new employees to help ease the transition. They are both lovely and bring with them to B3 hefty brains and great personalities.

Grey Litaker is not only a speedy and detailed inventory assistant but a Natural Philosophy student at Shimer college. She adores creepy crawly things and animals and says if she can’t spend her life somewhere beautiful looking at animals and thinking, “she’ll settle for doing math all of the time.” Yes, she’s our kind of gal.

Lisa Rosenburg is the newest lady processing your orders.  Like many of you, she feels most at home being creative and is an avid crafter and certified graphic artist.  Originally hired as a seasonal worker, we quickly realized she was too great to let go after the holidays and decided to keep her on as a full-fledged employee to continue to help us manage the ever-growing mountain of orders.

Speaking of that mountain of orders, I also want to take a moment to acknowledge the entire B3 team who worked 7 days a week during the holiday season to keep up with orders, inventory, and shipping. It is quite incredible to be part of a team of people so dedicated to delivering superior products and services to our customers. Even when things are crazy busy, people are still smiling and bringing positive energy to the table. If you have been on the receiving end of this dedication, consider taking a moment to let everyone know that you appreciate all they do by dropping us an email at [email protected], posting on our facebook wall, tweeting to us, or leaving a comment here on the blog. So many of you already let us know how much you appreciate us and it really does mean the world to us.

Happy New Year!

Follow the CHAINED Virtual Book Tour and win!

Catch CHAINED on the road + Catch up with Rebeca online!

We are totally excited for the upcoming live events celebrating the release of CHAINED but we’re less excited that we can’t party with all of our readers across the country (and the world!)  To remedy this problem, we created a Virtual Book Tour!  Starting December 11th, Rebeca will be making “stops” at several blogs over the course of the week. These unique interviews with some of our favorite jewelry bloggers will cover topics including how CHAINED got published, Rebeca’s success as an entrepreneur and philanthropist, what she has learned from teaching others the art of chainmaille and how CHAINED can help even a novice become a proficient chainmailler.

Leave a comment and win a B3 Gift Certificate!

Every stop on the tour is a chance for you to win a Blue Buddha Boutique gift certificate worth $10. Simply comment on the blog post Rebeca appears in that day for your chance to win.  Comments open as soon as the blog is posted and end at noon CST the next day (so the Monday blog will accept contest comments from the time it is posted on Monday until noon Tuesday and so on.)  We will randomly choose a winner each day at 1pm CST.

B3 at the One of a Kind Show THIS WEEKEND!

We are so pleased to be one of the over 600 artists participating in the One of a Kind Show & Sale again this year.  Rebeca has already been rocking it out at our booth (#8087!) selling her unique handmade chainmaille jewelry.  However, the B3 goodness happening at the show doesn’t stop there.  Rebeca’s Mystical Waterfall necklace will be working the runway this weekend.  Also, you can stop by our booth on Saturday at 1pm for a special artist demonstrationChainmaille: From Chain-Link Shirts to Spectacular Jewelry.  Stop by and feel free to ask any chainmaille question you’d like.  Wondering about colored rings?  What are the best projects for beginners?  Do you want to know which of Rebeca’s projects have gone terribly wrong?  Just ask!  The demonstration is only supposed to last 20 minutes, but Rebeca will stick around to answer your questions until they have all been answered.  You can also take this opportunity to check out her new book, CHAINED.

Longtime student Lisa and her friend rocking out the One of a Kind Shopping bags.

Finally, we were all super-excited when we saw that Rebeca’s Poseidon’s Embrace (which has been popping up on the One of a Kind website, ads, and eblasts galore) is also gracing the OoaK shopping bags!  All this exposure is obviously exciting for us at B3, but we mostly excited about the opportunity for us to continue to position the art of making chainmaille jewelry alongside other highly respected art forms – right where it belongs!

See you at the show!

We have a winner! Two, really!

Every year at the DIY Trunk Show, we have a Guess How Many Rings contest at the Blue Buddha booth. It’s always a ton of fun for me to see what people’s perceptions of quantity are. It is clear that people tend to overestimate…often by a lot. :-)

You can see the target jar way to the right of our display:

For those wishing to play at home before you read the answer…these rings are size P16, and yes, there is a layer of black rings at the top, the same height as the other colors.

This year, we had two winners! One guy I remember, because he came up and very carefully studied the rings, and took a good couple of minutes to do some calculations based on the volume of the container. Very detailed! I am not sure what method the other person used, but the end result was the same. So congratulations to Paul K. and Maria S. – your guesses of 12,000 rings were closest to the actual number of 11,100 and you each win a gift certificate worth $25.

And now for the usual mathy geekiness surrounding the guesses (I have too much fun with numbers, sometimes):
Range: 742 – 800,000
Mean (average): 34,044
Mean w/o 2 highest and 2 lowest: 5,913
Median: 4,764
Mode (most popular guesses): 12,000
I find it interesting that the Mode was also the winning number!
Runners up: 10,133 (off by 967), 70,000 (off by 1,200)
Most people underestimated – of all the guesses,80 % were less than the total.
